Act 3 scene 1

Characters: Macbeth,Banquo,Servent and Murderer

Scene set: Macbeth’s Castle.

Summary: Banquo enters alone and explains that Macbeth has all the titles the witches had promised him but he suspects that he had done something wrong in order to get into the position of king. Macbeth enters and the talk with banquo. Banquo then exits and Macbeth presents a speech about how banquo’s knows to much and he should be dealt with in case he speaks. Macbeth then speaks with a murderer about killing Banquo. He goes a long way(more than necessary) about why he should kill Banquo. The Murderer wouldn’t really care who the person his as its his job. This suggests that he is proving to him self why he should kill banquo .

Interesting quotes:”Our fears in Banquo Stick deep, and in his royalty of nature that which would be feared. ‘Tis much he dares,” This quote clearly states that Macbeth is worried and scared of what Banquo knows and he even admits that there is something about him that scares him. He also says that Banquo does take risks and he may tell someone. Later on in the passage he makes references about reasons why hes afraid of Banquo. This of course is proving the relationship between Macbeth and Banquo is very fragile as both are suspicious of each other and they both are worried of each other. This suggests that they their friendship is very on edge and shows that after Macbeth becoming king, his relationships with other people have been deteriorating (including lady Macbeth). This could be because that he has been consumed by the prophecies that the witches have told him and because f this his normal life has been also been deteriorating.

Act 2 Scene 4

Old man and Rosse talk about the strange events that have happened that and that they are “unnatural” because of the death of King Duncan. The old man even says that these are the strangest event that hae ever happend. “Threescore and ten I can remember well,Within the volume of which time I have seen Hours dreadful and things strange, but this sore night Hath trifled former knowings.”

Act 2 Scene 3

Characters: Macbeth,Lady Macbeth,Porter,Macduff,Lenox,Banquo,Donalbain,Malcolm

Scene set:Inside Macbeth’s Castle

Brief summary: A Porter is drunk and stumbles through the hall way to open the gates for Lennox and Macduff. Lennox and Macduff complain about the slow response of the porter. Macbeth then enters and Macduff asks whether the king is awake Macbeth doesn’t think so He brings him to the king instead Macduff goes him self.  Macduff then comes back in horror and says”O horror, horror, horror!Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee!“.He says h found the king dead and they ring the alarm bell. Lady Macbeth then enters and pretends to be confused. Every one else enters to here the news. Macbeth then says how he now regrets killing them but that he couldn’t hold back his rage. Lady Macbeth faints and Lennox and Macduff are suspicious. Malcolm and Donalbain are fearful that who ever killed Duncan might go after them. They declare that they will split ways to separate the fortune. Malcolm will go England and Donalbain to Ireland.

Marry, sir, nose-painting, sleep, and urine. Lechery, sir, it provokes and unprovokes. It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance. Therefore, much drink may be said to be an equivocator with lechery. It makes him, and it mars him; it sets him on, and it takes him off; it persuades him, and disheartens him; makes him stand to and not stand to;” Although this quote at first glance may have a sexual meaning as drinking alcohol makes people more confident and increases the sex drive but decreases the performance and it sets you up to fail.  If we change the factors like the alcohol to the factors that influenced Macbeth to do what he did and change the what it effects (sex drive) to macbeth him self you will see something interesting. The factors that affected Macbeth decision were the witches giving him there prediction and Lady Macbeth constantly pushing him and convincing to go through with the deed.” It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance” If we now look at the first part of the quote we can see that the witches and lady Macbeth did defientally provoke his desire to be king as back to act 1 scene 3 he never even thought of the prospect of being king but once the witches gave him there prediction he began speculating and imaging what it would be like. This is the provekening the desire. “All hail,Macbeth! that shall be king hereafter”.If we look at the second part of the quote “but take away the performance” you can see after Macbeth has killed Duncan his mind begins to deteriorate and freaks out at very small details which will in time affect him as king. This will effect his performance. Because this is all correct so far could we then predict that it will lead to his down fall as in the quote ” It makes him, and it mars him“. This could be Shakespeare’s way of hinting the future.

Act 2 Scene 2

Characters: Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

Quick Summary: Macbeth comes from Duncan’s chamber and he has just killed Duncan. He is having a mental breakdown and is hallucinating. Lady Macbeth is trying to get him together as he has to back into the chamber to give the daggers to the unconscious guard to frame them for the murder. Quotes:”Infirm of purpose!Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the deadAre but as pictures. ‘Tis the eye of childhood fears a painted devil” Lady Macbeth’s say this to Macbeth while he refuses to go back into the chamber. This quotes is saying that the dead can no hurt you just as pictures cant either and children are scared of pictures. Again Lady Macbeth is calling Macbeth a coward.”Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood Clean  from my hand? No, this my hand will rather The multitudinous seas incarnadine,Making the green one red.” As Macbeth says this he is desperate. He wants the blood to be clean from his hands even if it takes all the worlds oceans to do so. But then he thinks it wont work as hes done to much bad and all the water will turn red. He kmows this was a mistake and he can not be foregiven
