Book #1 T.H.U.G

The hate you give (T.H.U.G) by Angie Thomas is a book i have all ready read and i think it fits well for opinons and emotional response. Here is the blurb

“Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.”

“Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.”

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Letter (Last one didn’t save)

Dear Mr Waugh. This letter is written about a student you have taught before, and is now for the third year running, in your class once again. This student has achieved many pieces of work with over the years, some of which is the best he has produced. He enjoys your leaning style and for the past few years has enjoyed the content within your courses. These elements combined has given him the lense to see potential colour in all language devised creation. This has lead to him not just to enjoy language more but also changed his view on language it self. Now he views language more like an art than just “another subject”. Because of this new found view he has also set his self expectations higher than what they once were. These expectations are not Excellence but more producing a piece of work that conveys many shades and colours relevant to the text. This boy is looking forward to the year ahead.

Question:Describe at least one important character in the written text(s).

Explain how the character changes throughout the text(s).

“All to thee, Thane of Glamis, All hail Macbeth, All hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor, All hail Macbeth , that shalt be king hereafter“.In the notorious play Macbeth the main characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are the bend in the river that forces the water, story, to go in its particular direction and then to its final destination. However these characters minds begin to change throughout the course of the text as the more and more they sacrifice their morals.

P1. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth has no desire for more power or more control and initially even ignores the witches prophecies that say he will become king. He surrenders himself to date while saying “If chance shall crown me king chance shall crown me without my stir“which is saying if he is to be king fate or God will ensure it will happen if its meant to be. However as the play progresses Macbeth finds himself wanting the power more and more. “Stars hide your fires, let not light see my black and deep desires. From the first minute she’s hears the news about the prophecies that the Witches gave Macbeth to when the murder on King Duncan is about to go ahead Lady Macbeth is pushing Macbeth towards the Throne at all costs and is one the key reasons he kills the King  “was the hope drunk”. She even wants to be like a devil and envokes dark forces in her “unsex me here” soliloquy. But this Lady Macbeth changes and near the end of the play the guilt of everything she has done gets to her. “Out damn spot out i say. one two, Why is it time to do it, hell is murky” This is a use of symbolism and Lady Macbeth thinks she has blood on her hands but in reality she does not. The blood is actually a symbol of all the blood that she feels thats shes created by making Macbeth do the things he has done because she was his driving force as she was the one that convinced him to kill king Duncan while saying “was the hope drunk” speech which was basically telling him he was a coward. This almost fearless Lady Macbeth in the beginning of the play leads to her downfall when she realises the amount of power she has is not worth all the things she’s done and which is why she kills herself in the end instead of facing all the guilt. Sacrificing your morals to achieve your ambitions often leads to your downfall.

Throughout the play Macbeth has a huge influnce what happens as hes king. During the climax of the play Macbeths mind begins to degrade to it worst and final state. Thing that were once natural to him he can no longer exucute and he feels his life in worth nothing and everything he has done to get to where he is was useless. “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, life creeps at this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recored time” This is said when his wife ,Lady macbeth has just died (presumablly killed her self). In shaspearan plays noble high stauts charecters speak in perfect iambic pentamiter to show there domance. However in this passage Macbeth strugles to speak in the rythm and only manages todo so roughly every 2nd line. The first line has 11 syllabels the se cond one has 10. This shows hisrapidally detorating mind as he is failing to do something he once found so simple, to speak. To further surrport this he uses thepersonification “petty pace” as if time is walking very slowly untill his “syabble of recored time” his death whitch suuggests thathe is no longer enjoying life and as we have seen he is going through a lot of stress and fatiuge.. This change in Macbeth state of mindhas fallen to the very bottom and ultimatley leads to his death. However this broken macbeth is ennsentail to the story as it makes sense why he thought that killing more people would make him feel better when in reality he acting out on desparation.

Describe at least one important object or symbol in the written text(s).
Explain why this object or symbol helped you to understand at least one character.

“Scorpions of  the mind” In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses a range of objects and symbolism in the written text to show the stresses and conflicts the characters face throughout the play. These object or symbols , such as blood as a sign of overwhelming guilt, then explains why characters such as Macbeth or Lady Macbeth ambitions lead their minds to snowball out of control and ultimately leads to their death from the effects on how the characters tried to achieve these ambitions.

Quote practise

The first meeting between Macbeth and witches set all the events in motion that lead to Macbeth final destruction.”“Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! -All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane Cawdor!-All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter“ which is the prophecy  from the witches saying he will become king. This is the seedling of Macbeth’s ambition that leads to destruction as at first Macbeth thinks its a silly impractical idea but as the play proceeds the idea grows within him and with the dark destructive influence of Lady Macbeth that manipulates his ambition to something much darker than its original form. This then leads him to do his first unspeakable act of killing king Duncan which leads him to his despair both in his future action and his mental state and becomes his ultimate down fall.

Question: How does Shelly convey the idea of Ozymandias hubris ij the poem

In the poem Ozymandias it is shown that this once king like figure shows extensive hubris using imagery. In the poem a explorer finds a “shattered” statue of Ozymandias which carved on the statue says from Ozymandias perspective which betrays himself as the “king of kings” and betrays him self as a extremely powerful figure. However shelly uses this extensive imagery to show us that he no longer has this power as he once thought. The traveler who is exploring the desert says “a shattered visage lies” where the head of this statue is now broken, weathered and no longer part of what it used to be. The carving also says “Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair” meaning that his works are impressive and you should fear what hes capable of. But the traveler also presents to us that nothing remains of his works except the statue head Legs and its sitting in the desert. He then presents to us.”The lone and level sands stretch far away” showing us that Ozymandias head lays alone in a vast desert as far you can see.

This underlying message of the poem shows us that no one human is capable of immortal power as humans are mortal are when they die there power fizzles out

Macbeth Quotes

Macbeth’s Deterioration.

Avaunt, and quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee.Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold“ Act 3 scene 4 when Macbeth is hosting the banquet and he sees Banquo’s ghost and freaks out in front of his guests. Lady Macbeth tries to tame him but it doesn’t work and Macbeth begins to reveal hints on the things hes done.

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last syllable of recorded time” Macbeth says this after he hears about the death of his wife Lady macbeth and his speech pattern even from him is starting to fail.

Stars, hide your fires! let not light see my black deep desires” This shows that Macbeth does indeed have a dark ambitions an he doesn’t what anyone else to see them. This completely contradicts what he said a scene back”If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without my stir” Macbeth continues to contradict him self through out the play until his death. He also seems to think he has total control but as we see in the play Macbeth is a sheep being lead but what he thinks is what he wants.

Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself
And falls on the other

quote said by Macbeth almost seeing what is about to hapen that this abition is too big and dark and will lead to his dwonfall. Ironically this happens

Syboism

Is this a dagger which I see before me handle towards my hand, a false creation of the mind.  Macbeth sees the dagger before hes about to kill king duncan. and shows his ambition to kill Macbeth

A falcon, tow’ring in her pride of place,Was by a mousing owl hawked at and killed. Just after the King dies the natural world it self begis to fret in response. Such as the a Owl that killed a hawk . This is symbolism shows that the death of King Duncan in such a creul way is leading to the natural world reacting in responce

Out, damned spot! Out, I say!—One, two. Why, then, ’tis time to do ’t. Hell is murky!. Lady Macbeth guilt is overcomeing her and her mind is begining its fall ikes Macbeths. This is sybolism of the gulit that shes faceing and shes usesing the blood as a sybol of the terrible deeds shes has created. “A little water clears us from this deed” said by lady Macbeth before

what’s done, is done This is a quote said by lady macbeth telling macbeth that he can not undo the things he has done and he has to move past this or he will suffer. Ironically He does suffer and she suffers to for what she has done and leads to both of thier down falls. Shakespear allso uses similar lines to this in a french text in the 14th cenrty. This is much true quote in our world as weant get to cuaght up on this.

Witches
Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! -All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane Cawdor!-All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter“.  Act 1 Scene 3 Witches say that Macbeth is Thane of Glamis and now Cawdor (He doesn’t know at the time) And that he will be king. Macbeth responds “The Thane of Cawdor lives:why do you dress me in borrowed robes?

“security Is mortals’ chiefest enemy.” When the witches bring the apparitions to tell Macbeth’s warnings about what could bring a end to his life. Macbeth however ignores this and it comes back to stab him in the end of the play.

fair is foul, and foul is fair hover through the fog and filthy air This quote is said by the witches in the begging of the play and is the paradox of the play. The witches are going to “hover” this to cause more evil. The witches then tell Macbeth that he will become king and he thinks its a good thing. But then he reliable what he has to do to get it it is no longer fair but foul or that he thinks hes invicable. These prophiecs seem good “fair” at first but become “foul” later and lead to his downfall. The paradox is things seem good for the charecters seem bad. Eg Macbeths invisability, King ducan feeling safe with macbeth, Macbeth a noble charecter, Lady Macbethes power corrpupting her mind.

Conflict
Stars, hide your fires! let not light see my black deep desires”
This shows that Macbeth does indeed have a dark ambitions an he doesn’t what anyone else to see them. This completely contradicts what he said a scene back”If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without my stir” Macbeth continues to contradict him self through out the play until his death. He also seems to think he has total control but as we see in the play Macbeth is a sheep being lead but what he thinks is what he wants.

Vaulting ambition, which o’er leaps itself
And falls on the other. He then ignores this what he said and goes after this ambition anyway quote said by Macbeth almost seeing what is about to hapen that this abition is too big and dark and will lead to his dwonfall. Ironically this happens. Although he conflicts

Soon after he is named Thane of Cawdor and at first he surrenders himself to fate and let it decide whether he will become king or not”If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me Without my stir.” This is Macbeth surrendering himself to fate similar to when Romeo says ”…He that hath steerage of my course, direct my sail”. In the play Romeo and Juliet Romeo is letting a higher power take to control over his life and Macbeth will the decision up to the higher power.
