Act 3 Scene 4

Characters:Macbeth,Lady Macbeth,Rosse,Lenox,Lords,Murderer

Scene set: Room in the palace,banquet prepared.

Macbeth welcomes and invites his dinner guests to sit down. Murderer enters and tells Macbeth that Banquo has been dealt with but Fleance had escaped. This leads to Macbeth being very worried. Macbeth then gives a toast but sees the tables full. Macbeth then sees the ghost of Banquo and reacts wildly which make him look a little crazy. Lords then exit. Macbeth then wants to see the witches again to know what the future is for him.

Quotes and other analysis:”I had else been perfect,Whole as the marble, founded as the rock,As broad and general as the casing air.But now I am cabined, cribbed, confined” Macbeth’s says tis quote when he finds out that fleance has escaped and on the run. This is a major issue for Macbeth because the witches had said that Banquo’s children will become king as well which means he is not safe as the witches predictions could still come true. Macbeth also says that if the murderers had also killed fleance he would have been safe and out of dangers way. He then says “But now I am cabined, cribbed, confined” This is also another reference on what is going on inside of him and it seems that he feels trapped and restrained. This means that he has lost his freedom that he once had as he now has to carefull what he does otherwise he could be exposed.The witchs had said that he will become king but so far nothing on how he is removed from that place and how it goes into fleances hands. This leads to Macbeth being fearful. This is then proven by this quote from Macbeth”There the grown serpent lies. The worm that’s fled Hath nature that in time will venom breed

 

Act 3 Scene 2

Charecters:Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Servent

Scene set:A room in Macbeths palace

But let the frame of things disjoint, both the worlds suffer,Ere we will eat our meal in fear, and sleepIn the affliction of these terrible dreams That shake us nightly. Better be with the dead,Whom we, to gain our peace, have sent to peace,Than on the torture of the mind to lie In restless ecstasy” This quote is explainng Macbeths fear and uncertainanty on what may happen next. He is in constant fear as everthing he does he is always fearfull and it is effecting hugely mentally. He thinks it would be better to be dead with Duncan than to live with the things he has done and says later on that Duncan is even lucky. Because he is living in so much fear he may also be doing ratinol things whitch may not make him a good king and if hes not carefull he may let somthing slip or do somthing to rash. This also shows that Macbeths state of mind continues to delcine and that he may of been better of to not of killed duncan. He also mentions this “, both the worlds suffer,” This is refred to erath and heaven.Back in Act 1 Scene 5 he said this quote “Stars,hide your fires! let not light see my black deep desires“. Stars here is also a refrence to heavean and that he doesnt want heaven or anyone else to see what he has planned. The eath of king Duncan however did indeed reacact to the death of Duncan and now Macbeth see this and is very worried about what the furture may hold. “Oh, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wifethou know’st that Banquo, and his Fleance, lives“. This is a efrence that Macbeth says him self almost admitting that he is going crazy about the events that are occuring. It aslo show thatb even now he is king he still doesnt feel better off.

Act 3 scene 1

Characters: Macbeth,Banquo,Servent and Murderer

Scene set: Macbeth’s Castle.

Summary: Banquo enters alone and explains that Macbeth has all the titles the witches had promised him but he suspects that he had done something wrong in order to get into the position of king. Macbeth enters and the talk with banquo. Banquo then exits and Macbeth presents a speech about how banquo’s knows to much and he should be dealt with in case he speaks. Macbeth then speaks with a murderer about killing Banquo. He goes a long way(more than necessary) about why he should kill Banquo. The Murderer wouldn’t really care who the person his as its his job. This suggests that he is proving to him self why he should kill banquo .

Interesting quotes:”Our fears in Banquo Stick deep, and in his royalty of nature that which would be feared. ‘Tis much he dares,” This quote clearly states that Macbeth is worried and scared of what Banquo knows and he even admits that there is something about him that scares him. He also says that Banquo does take risks and he may tell someone. Later on in the passage he makes references about reasons why hes afraid of Banquo. This of course is proving the relationship between Macbeth and Banquo is very fragile as both are suspicious of each other and they both are worried of each other. This suggests that they their friendship is very on edge and shows that after Macbeth becoming king, his relationships with other people have been deteriorating (including lady Macbeth). This could be because that he has been consumed by the prophecies that the witches have told him and because f this his normal life has been also been deteriorating.

 

Act 2 Scene 4

Characters: Macduff,Rosse,Old man

Scene set: Outside the castle

Old man and Rosse talk about the strange events that have happened that and that they are “unnatural” because of the death of King Duncan. The old man even says that these are the strangest event that hae ever happend. “Threescore and ten I can remember well,Within the volume of which time I have seen Hours dreadful and things strange, but this sore night Hath trifled former knowings.”

Act 2 Scene 3

Characters: Macbeth,Lady Macbeth,Porter,Macduff,Lenox,Banquo,Donalbain,Malcolm

Scene set:Inside Macbeth’s Castle

Brief summary: A Porter is drunk and stumbles through the hall way to open the gates for Lennox and Macduff. Lennox and Macduff complain about the slow response of the porter. Macbeth then enters and Macduff asks whether the king is awake Macbeth doesn’t think so He brings him to the king instead Macduff goes him self.  Macduff then comes back in horror and says”O horror, horror, horror!Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee!“.He says h found the king dead and they ring the alarm bell. Lady Macbeth then enters and pretends to be confused. Every one else enters to here the news. Macbeth then says how he now regrets killing them but that he couldn’t hold back his rage. Lady Macbeth faints and Lennox and Macduff are suspicious. Malcolm and Donalbain are fearful that who ever killed Duncan might go after them. They declare that they will split ways to separate the fortune. Malcolm will go England and Donalbain to Ireland.

Marry, sir, nose-painting, sleep, and urine. Lechery, sir, it provokes and unprovokes. It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance. Therefore, much drink may be said to be an equivocator with lechery. It makes him, and it mars him; it sets him on, and it takes him off; it persuades him, and disheartens him; makes him stand to and not stand to;” Although this quote at first glance may have a sexual meaning as drinking alcohol makes people more confident and increases the sex drive but decreases the performance and it sets you up to fail.  If we change the factors like the alcohol to the factors that influenced Macbeth to do what he did and change the what it effects (sex drive) to macbeth him self you will see something interesting. The factors that affected Macbeth decision were the witches giving him there prediction and Lady Macbeth constantly pushing him and convincing to go through with the deed.” It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance” If we now look at the first part of the quote we can see that the witches and lady Macbeth did defientally provoke his desire to be king as back to act 1 scene 3 he never even thought of the prospect of being king but once the witches gave him there prediction he began speculating and imaging what it would be like. This is the provekening the desire. “All hail,Macbeth! that shall be king hereafter”.If we look at the second part of the quote “but take away the performance” you can see after Macbeth has killed Duncan his mind begins to deteriorate and freaks out at very small details which will in time affect him as king. This will effect his performance. Because this is all correct so far could we then predict that it will lead to his down fall as in the quote ” It makes him, and it mars him“. This could be Shakespeare’s way of hinting the future.

Act 2 Scene 2

Characters: Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

Quick Summary: Macbeth comes from Duncan’s chamber and he has just killed Duncan.He is having a mental breakdown and is hallucinating. Lady Macbeth is trying to get him together as he has to back into the chamber to give the daggers to the unconscious guard to frame them for the murder. Macbeth continues to freak out and is almost unresponsive to Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth then decides to go into the chamber herself. Macbeth is regretting the decision to kill Duncan

Quotes:”Infirm of purpose!Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the deadAre but as pictures. ‘Tis the eye of childhood fears a painted devil” Lady Macbeth’s say this to Macbeth while he refuses to go back into the chamber. This quotes is saying that the dead can no hurt you just as pictures cant either and children are scared of pictures. Again Lady Macbeth is calling Macbeth a coward.”Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood Clean  from my hand? No, this my hand will rather The multitudinous seas incarnadine,Making the green one red.” As Macbeth says this he is desperate. He wants the blood to be clean from his hands even if it takes all the worlds oceans to do so. But then he thinks it wont work as hes done to much bad and all the water will turn red. He kmows this was a mistake and he can not be foregiven

Act 2 Scene 1

Characters: Macbeth, Banquo,Fleance

Summary: Banquo and his son talk about what time it is and how there are no stars on a moonless witch in normal circumstances is impossible. Banquo express that he has dreamt about the witches and offers the knowledge to Macbeth who replied by saying only if he wants and continues that he hasn’t been thinking about them(which isn’t true).This is the beginning of Banquos and Macbeths relationship declining and becoming untrustworthy between each other which leads to his death. Banquo and Fleance leave. Macbeth then sees a floating dagger and cant decide whether what he is saying is real or not, He then decides its a message to him

More depth + quotes: In our world there should be stars if there is a moon, but because there isn’t this would mean something metaphysical going on “There husbandry in heaven,there candles are all out“. This is ironic as a few scenes back Macbeth says a few scenes back wants to hide what his is planning from the heavens “Stars,hide your fires! let not light see my black deep desires”

Act 1 Scene 7

Characters: Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

Scene set: Macbeth’s Castle, In a room where Duncan and his royalty are not.

Macbeth talks to himself and does not wish to go ahead with plan of killing Duncan and he’s say by doing something terrible such as killing Duncan it wouldn’t be teaching people to commit more violence and that something terrible might come to himself “We still have judgement here,that we but teach bloody instructions,which,being taught,return to plague th’ inventor“.He also mentions that this ambition is taking it one step to far and coul make things worse. “Valuting ambition,which o’er leaps itself and falls on the other“.When Lady Macbeth enters Macbeth explains to her that the wont continue with the plan as Duncan has been good to him and given him so much like Thane of Cawdor. This gives the image that Macbeth isnt after absolute power and he is fine with what he has (which is still a lot).Lady Macbeth it outraged and can see her plan is quickly falling apart “Was the hope drunk,Wherein you dressed yourself“. She goes on calling him a coward and that he can’t act on his ambitions. Macbeth disagrees with this and says”I dare do all that may become a man,Who dares do more is none. Lady Macbeth uses his words against him as it was his idea at first(even though she showed greater interest than he did) and says this “How tender ’tis to love the babe that milks me:I would, while it was smiling in my face,Have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums,And dash’d the brains out, had I so sworn as you Have done to this.”This shows Lady Macbeth true nature or perhaps she is trying be more evil like she said she would. She then tells Macbeth the plan and he agrees. Lady Macbeth has successfully changed his mind and Macbeth has the full attent of doing this crime.

 

Act 1 Scene 6

Characters: Duncan,Macbeth,Banquo,Lady Macbeth,Donalbain,Lenox,Macduff,Rosse and Angus

Scene set: Duncan and his royalty enter. Duncan expresses his appreciation for the place “This castle hath a pleasant seat“. This is ironic as this is where this is where they plan to kill him. Lady Macbeth then enters and pretends to be honored by hi presents”All our service, in every point twice done and then done double.” Duncan is grateful and the scene ends.

 

Metaphor Post

Shakespeare shows the audience and reader the characters traits and their ambitions by using metaphors. Also While doing this he creates an atmosphere of tension/anxiety in each scene. In Act 1, Scene 5, Lady Macbeth in her soliloquy does exactly this. Lady Macbeth receives the news that Macbeth is coming back to his castle. At this point she is summoning dark spirits to make her more evil so she can convince Macbeth to kill the king “Come thick night,and pall thee in dunnest smoke of hell,”In this soliloquy, Lady Macbeth first states the night being thick and bringing this upon the real world”Come thick night“She uses the word thick like the consistency of a liquid or its dense with. Night however can not be physically thick, so this a use of metaphor as she’s relating night as an object as thick and dense. The word thick with night sets an atmosphere of what she is thinking and her ambitions. For example when you think of the phrase thick and dense night, many will make a picture of being cold,scared and like the scenery around is hard to see as there’s fog. This gives the impression that she has dark thoughts and ambitions for wanting such chaos to come upon the world.In the play this is true as she wants these darker spirits to come to her like they did with Macbeth and to bring her darker thoughts and to get rid of all sympathy left within her. She then says “and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell” This means cover the world in the smoke of hell. Of course in Christianity hell is a place some will go after you die,so how can the smoke from hell come to earth. Well i would be thinking that she is trying to summon or tempt the evil spirits of the world to come upon her like and the rest of the world like the witch’s did with Macbeth and give her a prediction or let her kill the king as she knows Macbeth would be to kind and could be hard to convince. She would want this as the situation is she is going to have to convince Macbeth to do it and also she clearly wants to start some trouble and become more powerful. This gives very clear and vivid images of her wants. This at the time of being presented this would have of disturbed the audience very much as back at those times most people had deep beliefs that hell was real and if a someone goes wanting to summon evil spirits from such a place people would be feeling the tension in the theater. Also what Lady Macbeth is saying contradicts what Macbeth said a scene back”If chance will have me king,why,chance may crown me without my stir”.This once again is going against fate and that things happen for a reason. This now shows that Macbeth and his wife are now not letting what the witches said to chance but are now going to make it happen. This shows some contrast between Shakespeare plays, as Romeo and Juliet was riddled with references to fate. Macbeth at this stage seems to moving in the opposite direction, or at least so the characters think.
